A Word on Passion

“Do you consider yourself a passionate person?”

“YES!”

“What are you passionate about?”

Uhhh. Umm. Everything?

Sometimes it’s photography, other times it’s languages, and next week it will be astronomy. Did you hear I’m trying knitting? (OK, I was never passionate about knitting, but I’ve gone through a few rounds of trying to make it a thing. It will never stick, but I will probably try it again.)

Sustainable fashion designer. Web designer. Color practitioner. Travel photographer. Travel writer. Cooking, interior design, writing, reading, art history, eating, hanging out with friends. Astrology, estate planning, art law, art crime, learning obscure languages.

After so many times not being able to answer what I’m passionate about in a succinct manner, I started to believe that I had no passion at all because I kept getting the message that I had to be passionate with specificity. I wasn’t allowed to change those passions on a whim, even though it’s my reality.

Picking one thing? That’s just not me. I prefer a cornucopia of choices.

I’m over other people’s definitions and expectations.

I am reclaiming my passion for life and the people I love. My passion for a luxurious coat, the most beautiful twist of phrase, or the juiciest white nectarine. My passion for the feeling when California subtly ushers in the next season, a feeling only natives understand. My passion for understanding the connections between languages and food all over the world.

I’m passionate about what I’m passionate about. And that’s enough for me.
